The Highest Quality Showreel Course in Australia

Why enrol in any Showreel Course, when you can work in a Professional Production Studio, on the same equipment used by Major Hollywood Studios, taught by an Internationally Awarded Feature Film Director?

During this 7-week course, you’ll work intensively on a 2-hander drama scene and then film it in a multi-cam studio. Then you’ll watch back in a supportive group setting and take it apart, beat by beat, and then take actionable steps to improve it.

Then you’ll  shoot the scene again using professional studio lighting on RED Digital Cinema cameras before it goes through an exacting post-production process that ensures the work is of the highest professional quality.

In the course, you’ll learn how to:

  • work with the camera
  • use light to your advantage
  • block and rehearse on set
  • make crucial choices about your performance
  • stay in the moment in a highly technical situation

Your Screen Acting Launchpad

  • 7 weekly 3-hour Sessions of Training & Workshopping
  • Shoot a Professional Showreel Scene (Twice!)
  • Learn From An Acclaimed Director & Actor With 20 Years Industry Experience

Session 1: Breaking Down The Script

In this introductory lesson, you’ll explore the process for breaking down a scripted scene for performance, and interrogate the most important choices actors must make in preparing their work.

Session 2: Rehearsal Process

In this lesson, you’ll learn useful techniques for rehearing screen drama scenes and put them into practice while you rehearse with your scene partner under the supervision of the tutor. You’ll get feedback on your performances and actionable steps to improve it.

Session 3: Scenework Rehearsal & Tutor Feedback

Rehearsals continue in this lesson and more feedback is given, this time from other members of the group. This lesson emphasises the technical elements of a screen performance, as you lay the  groundwork for filming to commence the following week.

Session 4: Multi-Cam Performance

In this lesson you step into a multi-cam shooting environment and film your scene as it is switched live in front of the group. With the camera ‘always on’ your performance, you learn how to harness the power of reactions and silent moments in scenes.

Session 5: Deconstructing the Multi-Cam Performance

During a full debrief of the multi-cam shoot, you get a unique look into the strengths and weaknesses of your performance on screen. You’ll uncover the nuances of working with the camera that make a big difference in the end product.

Session 6: Showreel Shoot Part 1

The Showreel Shoot is the culmination of the whole course. With your scene partner, you will film your scene in the JJ Splice Studio from multiple angle and do multiple takes to create your best possible performance. Two scenes will be shot in this session, and students who are not filming this week will observe the process for valuable insights into screen performance.

Session 7: Showreel Shoot Part 2

The Showreel Shoot continues, with the tutor directing and shooting the scenes. Two scenes will be shot in this session, and students who are not filming this week will observe the process for valuable insights into screen performance.

Bonus Session: Screening and Debrief

During this informal bonus session, we screen all the completed Showreel Scenes on the Big Screen in the basement and conduct a debrief of the work. We also look at what could be next in your screen acting career and how to maximise your Showreel scene to open doors.

This course is for you if:

  • You’re an actor who wants to improve their screen acting technique
  • You want to get more auditions by having a strong Showreel
  • You enjoy learning in a small supportive group

Where is the course held?

The course is held at JJ Splice Films, 56 Buckingham Street, Surry Hills. Just a short walk from Central Station with free street parking after 5:30pm.

What is the maximum class size in the course?

The maximum class size is 8 people.

In the unlikely event that 6 of the 8 spots are not filled before the first day of the course, it may be postponed until a future date.

What do I get after completing the course ?

After the course you will be sent your own professionally filmed, edited and post-produced Showreel Scene. You can download the scene in High Definition and use it to promote your acting work.

How is my Showreel Scene chosen in the course?

When you enrol, you have a consultation meeting with the Tutor where you discuss the sort of scene you are interested in filming for your Showreel. A collaborative process unfolds where you get to select from hundreds of possible scripts. You then work with the Tutor to identify the perfect scene or scenes for the course.

If you want, you can bring in your own scene to work on, but we will need to ensure it meets the course objectivest. If you're unsure, you can send your scene to the Tutor in advance. Click here to contact us.

Can I choose my own Scene Partner in the course?

In the course, you’ll be working with another course participant as your Scene Partner. If you really want to work with a specific person, encourage them to enrol in the course and you can then work together as Scene Partners.

What equipment will we be using in the course?

In the course you will be working with RED Digital Cinema Cameras, the same system that is used to shoot Oscar-Winning motion pictures. We will also work with wireless lapel microphones and professional studio lighting, which will ensure your Showreel scene looks professional and cinematic. During the multi-cam shoot, we work with two cameras (one for each actor) and we switch live between both actors.

What preparation do I need to do before the first week of the course?

Before the course, we strongly recommend that you study the screenplay thats supplied to you and begin learning your lines. The more grasp you have of the dialogue, the easier it is to rehearse and shoot your scene.

What experience do I need to take part in the course?

You don’t need specific previous experience to enrol in the course. It is certainly helpful if  you have done some acting before and understand the basics of screen performance.

Are there any age restrictions to take part in the course?

All participants need to be over 18 years of age.

When do I have to pay for the course?

You can either pay a 30% deposit ($248) with the balance due before the first week of the course; or you can pay in full; or you can utilise a 8-week payment plan where you pay $103 per week via direct debit.

What payment methods can I use to pay for the course?

You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Cryptocurrency (ETH or BTC), Direct Bank Transfer or Cash.

Can I get a refund if I choose not to attend the course?

All payments made toward the course are final and non-refundable, except if the dates change and you are unavailable for the new dates.

In the event that you are unable to attend the course after enrolling , you will receive a Credit Note with JJ Splice Films equal to the amount you paid for the course. This means you can enrol in a different course, or use your Credit Note towards the cost of your own Showreel.

What happens after the course?

On completion of the course, you will have one high-quality Showreel scene which you can use to show to anyone in the industry to increase the amount of work you’re booking.

However, many actors have more than one scene on their Showreel and so you may want to shoot more content. So when you finish the course, you will be invited to upgrade your scene to a Full Showreel package, which will mean you film another drama scene as well as two monologues.

You also get special discounts across all JJ Splice Showreels packages in the future.

What's the Special Bonus Screening Session about?

The bonus screening is one of the most exciting parts of the course. During this session we watch back all  the scenes we’ve shot on the Big Screen with Cinema-quality projection. We talk about the strengths and challenges of the work and discuss what’s next in your acting career.
